What's the best spot for a home charger?
Where Should a Home EV Charger Be Installed?
How to choose a practical location for a home EV charger, based on parking, cable reach and weather.
Start with where the car actually stops, not where the wall looks tidiest. The charger needs to be close enough for the lead to reach the vehicle's charge port comfortably, without stretching across a doorway or walkway.
Charge port position matters: front, side or rear varies by model, and it determines which side of the garage or carport makes sense. If you may change vehicles later, a slightly more central position adds flexibility.
Distance to the switchboard is the cost driver, so a position that's both convenient and reasonably close to the board is usually the sweet spot.
Also consider mounting height for easy plugging in, whether the position is sheltered from Ballarat's wetter months, and Wi-Fi coverage if the charger is a smart unit — detached garages sometimes need an extender.
Where professional help is needed: Final positioning should be agreed with the installing electrical contractor after assessing the wall, route and clearances. This guide is general information only and is not a substitute for a site-specific electrical assessment.
