Can I charge my car with my solar panels?
Charging an EV From Rooftop Solar
How rooftop solar and home EV charging can work together, and where the practical limits are.
When your panels produce more than the house is using, a compatible smart charger can direct some of that surplus into the car instead of exporting it. This is why solar households often prefer daytime charging.
It depends on the equipment. Solar-aware charging generally needs a charger that supports it plus compatible metering, and sometimes a supported inverter. Not every charger integrates with every solar system.
A simpler alternative is scheduled daytime charging: no solar tracking, but if the car is home during the day it still uses a good share of your generation.
In Ballarat's cooler, cloudier months, output falls and solar-only charging can be slow or intermittent, so most setups still draw from the grid at times. Off-peak tariffs can make overnight charging attractive even in a solar home.
Where professional help is needed: Solar and charger compatibility must be confirmed for your specific system before purchase or installation. This guide is general information only and is not a substitute for a site-specific electrical assessment.
