Why do home charger quotes vary so much?
Home EV Charger Installation Cost: What Drives the Price
Understand what makes one home EV charger installation cost more than another, and how to compare quotes properly in Ballarat.
Home EV charger installation is priced on the property rather than the product. The charger itself is a known cost; everything around it depends on your switchboard, the distance to where you park, the wall you're mounting to and the supply your home has.
The largest variable in most homes is cable distance. A charger mounted on the other side of the switchboard wall needs very little cable and very little labour. A charger on a detached shed at the back of a long block may need a trenched run, heavier cable and considerably more time.
Switchboard condition is the second big one. Boards with no spare space, or with older protection devices, may need work before a dedicated charger circuit can be added. This is identified during the assessment — which is exactly why photos help.
Then there's supply type. Three-phase installations generally involve more cable, more protection and more labour than single-phase, so they usually cost more. Add-ons like solar integration, load management, pedestal mounting and outdoor weatherproofing all shift the figure too.
When comparing quotes, look at what's actually included: charger model, circuit size and protection, cable route and length, mounting method, testing and commissioning, and whether switchboard work is allowed for. The cheapest number isn't always the same scope of work.
Where professional help is needed: Pricing can only be confirmed after an assessment, and all fixed electrical work is completed by appropriately licensed and registered electrical contractors. This guide is general information only and is not a substitute for a site-specific electrical assessment.
