Will my charger still work if I change cars?
Can One Charger Work With Different EV Brands?
Whether a home EV charger works across different EV brands, and what to check before buying.
Almost all EVs sold in Australia use a Type 2 AC connection for home charging, so a Type 2 wallbox will generally work across brands. That makes most home chargers reasonably future-proof if you change vehicles.
Tesla's Wall Connector is a common question. Later versions can charge many compatible non-Tesla EVs, but compatibility should be confirmed for your specific vehicle and the exact version of the unit.
Charging speed is set by the car, not the charger. A charger capable of more than your vehicle accepts simply charges at the vehicle's limit — no harm done, just no extra speed.
If a second EV is likely later, mention it early. Load management, a suitable charger choice, or provision for a second circuit can be planned now rather than retrofitted.
Where professional help is needed: Confirm compatibility against your vehicle's documentation and the charger manufacturer's specifications before purchasing. This guide is general information only and is not a substitute for a site-specific electrical assessment.
